A Day in Your Life at MKS:
As a Focused Ion Beam (FIB) Scientist you will support advanced materials characterization and failure analysis in our Technology Center in Yokohama. The role focuses on nanoscale and microscale analysis of plated coatings, interconnects, surface finishes, and metallurgical structures using FIB-SEM and complementary analytical techniques.
You will work closely with R&D, application engineers and customer support teams to manage customer requests like characterization of plating performance, coating integrity and process-related defects.
Your responsibilities include:

Operate the Focused Ion Beam (FIB) tool and connected instruments, such as EDX and EBSD as well as lamella preparation

Perform sample preparation, and analyses using Materials Science methods

Prepare reports and archive results according to established standards

Optimize and develop new sample preparation techniques and new application methods

Develop automated digital evaluation routines

Manage customer requests and coordinate efficient work scheduling to ensure optimal utilization of FIB resources

Build a collaborative relationship with your colleagues in the business units and become the go-to person for developing coating processes and analysing trouble shootings.

Close cooperation with the ww FIB teams, especially with the Berlin team

Provide technical consulting and training to customers, application team and R&D

Conduct analyses in the presence of customers

Identify and engage external cooperation partners, and manage outgoing requests, for example TEM
-
Maintain laboratory documentation, quality assurance, and safety compliance in the area of responsibility.

Ensure operational readiness of laboratory equipment and coordinate service technicians

Ensure the confidentiality of the information
Skills You Bring:
-
Master’s degree or PhD in Materials Science / Metallurgy / Surface Engineering / Nanotechnology or related discipline

Hands-on experience with metallographic preparation, microscopy, FIB-SEM systems and materials characterization techniques in PCB plating or Semiconductor industry

Profound understanding of crystallography, metallic coatings, surface analysis, failure analysis methodologies

Strong analytical and technical skills in statistical data evaluation and reporting.

Strong English language skills, both written and verbal

Team player with excellent communication skills

Professional and appropriate conduct in various situations

Careful, detail-oriented working style
