About the Role
Astroscale is seeking a Junior Cloud Architect to support, operate , and gradually help design our AWS cloud environment. This role is intended as a growth position for someone with strong AWS infrastructure fundamentals who wants to develop into a Cloud Architect. You will begin by learning and supporting the current AWS environment, handling day-to-day infrastructure work, contributing to architecture decisions under guidance, and progressively taking ownership of Terraform-based infrastructure as code. Over time, this position is expected to grow into a Cloud Architect role as technical ownership, architectural judgment, and business understanding mature.
Key Responsibilities
AWS Infrastructure & Operations
- Learn, support, and operate the existing AWS environment, including EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, security groups, Route 53, VPN/connectivity, and related infrastructure services.
- Assist with provisioning, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, patching, backup/restore, and operational maintenance of AWS-hosted infrastructure.
- Help maintain infrastructure documentation, diagrams, runbooks, change records, and environment inventories so the AWS estate remains understandable and supportable.
Cloud Architecture Support
- Support Cloud Architects and senior engineers in designing secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-aware AWS solutions aligned with business and technical requirements.
- Participate in architecture reviews, technical planning, proof-of-concepts, and migration activities, initially under guidance and with increasing ownership over time.
Review existing AWS implementations and help identify practical improvements for reliability, security, performance, maintainability, and cost optimization.
Terraform & Infrastructure as Code
- Work with existing Terraform modules, state, variables, and deployment workflows to understand how the current AWS environment is provisioned and maintained .
- Contribute Terraform changes under review, follow version-controlled infrastructure standards, and gradually take ownership of Terraform maintenance and improvements.
- Support safe infrastructure change processes, including planning, peer review, testing, rollback planning, and documentation.
Use automation, scripting, and Git workflows to improve repeatability, reduce manual work, and strengthen infrastructure consistency.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- 2+ years in IT infrastructure, cloud operations, systems administration, DevOps, or a related technical role.
- Hands-on familiarity with AWS core services such as EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, security groups, Route 53, CloudWatch, and basic networking concepts.
- Foundational understanding of cloud architecture concepts, including availability, scalability, resilience, security, and cost awareness.
- Basic experience with Infrastructure as Code, preferably Terraform; willingness and ability to grow into Terraform ownership.
- Comfortable using Git and participating in reviewed change workflows such as pull requests or merge requests.
- Ability to troubleshoot infrastructure issues methodically, read logs, follow runbooks, and document findings clearly.
- Strong learning mindset, attention to detail, and willingness to take ownership of operational tasks while developing architectural capability.
- Good documentation habits, including diagrams, SOPs, change notes, and environment inventories.
- L anguage : Professional proficiency in either English or Japanese, written and verbal. Must also possess at least basic conversational skills in the other language, with a demonstrated passion and commitment to actively learning it.
Availability for planned weekend or late-night maintenance windows as needed.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, or active progress toward AWS certification.
- Experience supporting Terraform in a team environment, including modules, remote state, provider versioning, and code review practices.
- Exposure to AWS Well-Architected concepts, including secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-optimized designs.
- Experience with AWS networking, hybrid connectivity, VPNs, DNS, security groups, NACLs, or Transit Gateway.
- Experience with monitoring, logging, and operational tools such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Datadog, or equivalent.
- Basic scripting experience with Bash, Python, or PowerShell for operational automation.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Japanese, written and verbal.
- Interest in using AI/LLM tools to accelerate documentation, troubleshooting, and Infrastructure as Code workflows.
