Announcement of Faculty Position
Faculty of Transdisciplinary Sciences for Innovation

(Transdisciplinary Sciences Using Mathematics, Data Science, and AI),
Kanazawa University

1. Number of Positions:
One position: Professor, Associate Professor, Lecturer or Assistant Professor

2. Affiliation: Faculty of Transdisciplinary Sciences for Innovation

3. Field of Specialization: Transdisciplinary Sciences Using Mathematics, Data Science, and AI

4. Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to promote
transdisciplinary research integrating the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences,
engineering, and medicine, by applying mathematical methods, data science, and artificial
intelligence (AI). In collaboration with faculty members of the Institute of Transdisciplinary
Sciences for Innovation, the candidate will also be expected to play a central role in leading and
advancing substantive transdisciplinary research that extends beyond collaboration confined to
closely related fields within the humanities and social sciences or within the natural sciences and
engineering. The candidate will also be expected to design and deliver educational initiatives
that contribute to transdisciplinary education and to the development of individuals capable of
driving social transformation. In an educational environment where students with backgrounds
in the humanities and social sciences and those with backgrounds in the natural sciences and
engineering learn together, the candidate will be expected to develop, implement, and expand
educational programs in mathematics, data science, AI, and programming, as well as
transdisciplinary educational programs, with due consideration for students from humanities and
social science backgrounds. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of education and
research in transdisciplinary fields using mathematics, data science, and AI.

(1) Courses to Be Taught:

Specialized undergraduate courses in the College of Transdisciplinary Sciences for Innovation
and specialized graduate courses in the Division of Convergence Science, Graduate School of
Frontier Science Initiative
In the College of Transdisciplinary Sciences for Innovation and the Division of Convergence
Science, Graduate School of Frontier Science Initiative, Kanazawa University provides
education that integrates the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and
medicine and promotes the creation of integrated knowledge. Teaching assignments will be
determined so as to enable the successful candidate to contribute actively to such
transdisciplinary education while drawing on their research background and expertise.
Courses may include courses in or related to mathematics, data science, artificial intelligence
(AI), and programming; courses that contribute to the integration of the humanities, social
sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and medicine; project-based courses; courses and
other academic activities related to transdisciplinary research, practical exercises, and

examinations; and other courses as required by the College of Transdisciplinary Sciences for
Innovation and/or the Division of Convergence Science. The specific courses to be assigned
will be decided in consultation with the appointee, taking into consideration their preferences,
background, and the University's teaching needs.
Note: Some of the courses listed above may be taught in English.

(2) Duties Other Than Teaching:
Academic advising designed to facilitate transdisciplinary learning; student support and
individual consultations; research supervision; student recruitment; entrance examination
duties; career guidance; community and public engagement; and other related duties.

(3) Other Duties:
The successful candidate will also be required to perform other duties deemed necessary by
the head of the relevant organizational unit.

5. Employment Status: The employment period is set for 5 years. Candidates may be eligible
for conversion to tenured status until the mandatory retirement age at the end of the fixed term
if they meet the prescribed requirements through a reappointment review, based on their
achievements during this period.

Re-appointment Performance Review Criteria

(1) Educational activities: such as lectures, practical training, seminars, research supervision,
student guidance, and development of educational programs

(2) Research activities: such as publications of international peer-reviewed journals and
conferences

(3) Research funding and contributions to the university and society

For applicants currently employed at Kanazawa University, the combined duration of the current
and any subsequent terms cannot exceed 10 years, which may result in a new employment
period of less than 5 years for the new term. Tenured faculty members at Kanazawa University
who are hired will be considered as “transferred”, without a new fixed term.

6. Qualifications and Requirements: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements
(1) The applicant must have a doctoral degree (including those who are expected to have a

doctoral degree by the time of employment) or have educational and research capabilities
equivalent to a doctoral degree.

(2) The applicant must have outstanding research achievements in their respective field and be
capable of engaging in education and research activities related to the specified field after
joining the position.

(3) The applicant should demonstrate a strong commitment and the ability to actively engage in
innovative transdisciplinary education, research, and administrative activities integrating the
humanities, sciences, and medicine in collaborate with faculty members of the College of
Transdisciplinary Sciences for Innovation.

(4) Nationality is not restricted. It is desirable that applicant possesses the ability to teach and
supervise students in both English and Japanese, and to carry out university service
(administrative duties) in Japanese.

(5) The applicant must live in Kanazawa or the surrounding area after being appointed to smooth
carry out education, research, and university service.

(5) Educational and research aspirations at College of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Sciences

(6) Past research and educational activities and their status (On a sheet of A4 paper)
(7) Reprints of major papers: (Up to five papers, one copy for each paper, photocopies accepted,

A4 size)
(8) The names and contact information of two referees (On a sheet of A4 paper).

10. Selection Process: After the initial screening of application materials, shortlisted candidates
may be invited for an interview and may be asked to give a mock lecture in Japanese and
English.

Note: Applicants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses, whether
traveling from within Japan or from overseas. However, depending on the circumstances, the
interview and mock lecture may be conducted online.
