Role Description
This is a remote role for a freelance Tour Leader (multiple roles). As a Tour Leader, you will be responsible for leading guided tours and providing exceptional customer service to ensure an unforgettable experience for participants. Your day-to-day tasks will include liaising with partners (accommodations, restaurant, transportation companies, etc) to make or reconfirm reservations, delivering tour-related cultural and historical content and attending to the needs of your customers to ensure a safe and excellent experience. You will be required to have outstanding communication and organisational skills to successfully lead tours.
Qualifications
- Experience leading guided tours is welcome, but not necessary
- Experience in providing outstanding customer service
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and remotely for a prolonged period of time
- Adaptability and problem-solving skills
- Fluency in English and Japanese (additional language skills are a plus)
Fitness
Walk Japan's tours range from walking city tours to mountain hiking tours. For most tours, leaders must be reasonably physically fit and be able to walk/hike for up to five to six hours. For our tours climbing mountains, a higher level of fitness and recognised competence/knowledge suitable for the terrain is required.
Knowledge of Japan
All tour leaders are expected to have at least five years of experience living in Japan. Tour leaders must be interested in Japan, including its history, traditions, culture and have a desire to continue learning about the country. Walk Japan provides tour leaders with training and materials to help lead tours. However, all Walk Japan tour leaders carry out their research and improve their knowledge in order not only to improve their skills but also to add to the pool of knowledge shared between all at Walk Japan.
Language
All tour leaders must have good conversational and, at least, a reasonable business-level spoken Japanese language ability. Tour leaders must also be able to read and, it is an advantage to write Japanese reasonably well. Although the majority of Japanese spoken on the tours is conversational, tour leaders must be confident that they can communicate in an emergency situation.

Work location will depend largely on which tour the Tour Leader is leading, but smoking is not permitted on the premises or while on duty.
