What to Expect
Tesla is seeking an Residential Energy Policy Adviser to join the Japan Energy Team, focusing on regulatory, electricity market operations, policy initiatives, business development and government relations across Japan to accelerate the deployment of Tesla’s energy products. This role will primarily support residential battery energy storage deployment and virtual power plant projects through close collaboration with the APAC Policy, Business Development and Residential Energy Teams. This role will also accelerate the deployment of virtual power plant solutions that aggregate distributed residential energy storage systems to provide grid services and market participation opportunities. Additionally, the position will involve building strategic partnerships with utilities, aggregators, and government stakeholders to scale VPP adoption across Japan, contributing to the company's mission of advancing sustainable energy solutions.
This position is highly cross-functional and critical to Tesla’s expansion into new energy markets.

What You’ll Do

Develop government policy and strategies to scale deployment of battery energy storage and virtual power plants, creating new market opportunities for Tesla’s residential energy products

Monitor and analyze regulatory and legislative developments in energy markets; actively participate in workshops and regulatory proceedings to shape market designs for residential energy products such as energy storage system or AC charging

Promptly identify potential risks arising from regulations/requirements related to cybersecurity, communication protocols, and differences from international standards etc, and work to mitigate or eliminate such risks through consultation with relevant government ministries and regulatory authorities

Represent Tesla’s interests in public forums and engage proactively with policymakers, regulatory commissions, utilities, trade groups, and external stakeholders to advance energy storage initiatives through regulatory filings and legislation. Cultivate Tesla’s relationships and standing with regulatory authorities.

Foster effective collaboration with business development, sales and engineering teams on policy and regulatory matters and build scalable business functions aligned with Tesla’s fast-paced execution culture.

Support regulatory and operational compliance efforts to upload and enhance Tesla’s reputation in the market
What You’ll Bring

5-10+ years of relevant work experience in the electricity or energy industry

Degree in a field relevant to energy, political science, economics, engineering, or utility business models, or equivalent experience (Masters, Juris Doctor, or other advanced degree preferred)

Deep knowledge of Japanese electricity markets and regulations (grid operations, interconnection rules, resource planning) and energy trading (JEPX/EPRX markets, battery storage and VPP operations), with the ability to translate and clearly communicate complex market rules to engineers

Working knowledge of utility planning processes and ability to advocate for energy storage policies at the government level (preferred: candidates with demonstrated specific policy outcomes through prior work)

Highly energetic and innovative personality with the ability to function autonomously in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities

Familiarity with developing compliance and risk management frameworks, with the ability to identify and mitigate regulatory risks that affect the business

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to synthesize and clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in English and in Japanese
