We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead full stack engineering for our satellite data platform, AxelGlobe. This role manages teams across backend, frontend, and analytics solutions while driving delivery of the platform roadmap with strong technical leadership.
The role sits at the intersection of engineering leadership, architecture, and product execution. You will guide teams building AxelGlobe's customer-facing platform, including self-serve purchasing, developer APIs, and AI-powered analytics capabilities.
At the current stage of the organization, where dedicated product and UX functions are still evolving, this role requires strong product ownership alongside engineering leadership. You will contribute to roadmap decisions, translate strategy into engineering execution, and ensure teams deliver meaningful customer and business outcomes.
This position is well suited for experienced engineering leaders or senior technical leaders transitioning into management who want to shape a platform product while building strong engineering teams.
- Engineering Leadership
- Lead and develop engineers across backend, frontend, and analytics disciplines through structured 1:1s, clear expectations, and continuous feedback.
- Define team goals aligned with key platform metrics such as API activation, search-to-download conversion, uptime SLOs, and search latency.
- Drive engineering delivery through effective sprint planning, backlog management, and dependency coordination while maintaining lightweight processes.
- Develop technical leadership within the team by establishing acting leads and reducing single points of dependency.
- Partner with software leadership on hiring by defining role profiles, conducting technical evaluations, and supporting final hiring decisions.
- Technical Architecture and Quality
- Ensure architectural integrity across backend systems, frontend applications, and analytics infrastructure as the platform scales.
- Lead design reviews for major capabilities such as API enhancements, data delivery systems, developer tooling, billing integration, and GIS functionality.
- Maintain strong engineering quality standards through code review practices, testing expectations, incident reviews, and architecture documentation.
- Establish observability across the platform through distributed tracing, logging, alerting, and SLO dashboards.
- Promote responsible AI-assisted development practices by setting standards for LLM-assisted coding and reviewing AI-generated code.
- Product Execution
- Partner with leadership and product management to translate platform strategy into quarterly engineering plans with clear milestones and risk visibility.
- Drive technical decisions within engineering teams while escalating major architectural or strategic choices when necessary.
- Encourage customer-focused engineering by involving engineers in discovery discussions, usability feedback, and early product validation.
- Define acceptance criteria for major features and maintain strong feedback loops from early customers to improve the platform.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with satellite data pipeline teams and cloud infrastructure teams to ensure platform capabilities scale with increasing data volume.
- Align engineering execution with platform strategy, satellite operations constraints, and long-term technical commitments.
- Provide leadership visibility into engineering delivery through forecasts, risk flags, capacity planning, and technical trade-off recommendations.
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading engineering teams across multiple disciplines.
- Strong technical background in backend systems and production data infrastructure with the ability to review and guide architecture decisions.
- Experience managing product engineering teams responsible for end-to-end delivery of customer-facing systems.
- Experience designing database schemas and optimizing query performance, including large-scale or spatial data workloads.
- Hands-on experience operating production systems on AWS including services such as ECS/Fargate, Lambda, S3, RDS, and messaging systems (or similar cloud-based services).
- Strong understanding of API design and developer platform best practices.
- Track record improving engineering delivery metrics such as cycle time, deployment frequency, and incident response.
- Business-level Japanese and English proficiency required. The engineering team operates primarily in English, while coordination with internal stakeholders, satellite operations, and enterprise customers often requires Japanese.
Favorable Skills / Experiences
- Experience with geospatial data, Earth observation, satellite systems, or large-scale scientific data platforms.
- Familiarity with geospatial data standards and tools such as STAC APIs, cloud-optimized geospatial formats, and geospatial processing libraries.
- Experience building developer-facing platforms including SDKs, API portals, or GIS integrations.
- Exposure to ML or computer vision systems in production environments.
- Experience implementing usage-based billing systems and self-serve SaaS platform flows.
- Active use of AI-assisted development tools and experience shaping engineering practices around them.
- Experience working in growth-stage or public technology companies with structured planning and delivery accountability.
- Experience with containerized infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code at platform scale.
