Employment Information for the Position at Iwate University Faculty of Science

and Engineering

1. Position and Number of Positions: 1 (one) professor, associate professor, or lecturer (tenure-track)

3. Field of Specialization:

Fundamentals of informatics: discrete structures, mathematical logic, theory of computation,

algorithm theory

Computational science: numerical computation methods, advanced algorithms

Intelligent informatics: search, reasoning, machine learning, knowledge acquisition, natural language

processing, data mining, ontology, agent systems

Soft computing: neural networks, probabilistic information processing

Perceptual information processing: pattern recognition, image processing, computer vision, acoustic

media processing, sensor fusion

General Education Subject: In order to establish a university-wide implementation system for

General Education Courses, etc., you will be required to be in charge of at least one of the "General

Education Courses" or "Specialized Basic Courses" based on your field of employment.

In addition, to meet the diversifying needs of learning and to promote diverse and advanced media

utilization, faculty members who are in charge of basic academic knowledge courses* in General

Education Courses are required to create on-demand content for remote classes and a video syllabus

(overview introduction).

*These are lecture courses in the applicant's research specialization held at a level of academic

knowledge that can be understood by lower-year students from faculty other than the applicant's.

On-demand content for remote classes consists of 1 credit (7 lessons of 100 minutes each) x 2

subjects (2 credits) or 2 credits (14 lessons of 100 minutes each) x 1 subject (2 credits) or more.

5. Qualifications

Applicants must:

(1) Have a doctoral degree or be expected to obtain one

(2) Have the ability to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students and promote

advanced research work

(3) Have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to JLPT N1 and English proficiency necessary

for education and research supervision

(4) Have the ability to properly engage in organizational operations as a member of a university

6. Starting Date: April 1, 2027

7. Term of Employment:

Professor and Associate Professor: No fixed term

Lecturer (tenure-track): Five-year fixed term

A mid-term evaluation will be conducted by the date on which three years have passed from the date

of appointment, and a tenure review will be conducted no later than six months before the expiration

of the tenure-track term. If the faculty member is judged to have achieved the goals required for the

granting of tenure during the term, tenure as an associate professor with no fixed term will be

granted. If the mid-term evaluation is particularly excellent, eligibility for tenure may be deliberated

at that time.

8. Compensation

Salary and Benefits: Based on the salary regulations of Iwate University and subject to annual salary

system (retirement allowance is paid at the time of retirement).

Working Hours: Discretionary working system for professional work, 7 hours and 45 minutes of de

facto working per day

Insurance: Employment Insurance, Social Insurance, Workers' Accident Compensation Insurance,

Mutual Aid Association of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Days off: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, year-end and New Year holidays, etc.

(2) An outline of teaching experience in the field of specialization (lectures taught and/or their

evaluation, experiences in instructing graduation research, etc.) (one A4 page)

(3) A list of research achievements (list by category such as peer-reviewed original scientific papers,

books, papers for international conferences, review/commentary papers, research reports, or oral

presentations). If the applicant is the first author or corresponding author, mark the name of the

author of the paper with an asterisk (*).

(4) Reprints of representative papers (photocopies are accepted; however, please select papers for

which the applicant is the first author or corresponding author)

(5) An outline of past research achievements (two A4 pages)

(6) A list of external grants received (list by category such as Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research,

joint research grants, donations for education and research, commissioned research, etc. Include

principal investigator and co-investigator roles.)

(7) Aspirations for education and research at Iwate University (two A4 pages)

(8) Name, affiliation, and contact information of two professional references who are willing to be

contacted about the applicant

(9) Any other documents for reference (experiences in being an official or member of an academic

society/association or national/prefectural/municipal government, taking a position or being a

committee member at your current institution, study abroad, international conference management,

etc.)

10. Application Period: From June 25, 2026 to no later than September 24, 2026. Application

documents must arrive by the deadline.

11. Selection Process

The selection process will be conducted in two stages.

Primary screening: document screening

Secondary screening: interviews, etc.

Applicants will be notified of the results immediately after the screening by email. Applicants who

pass the primary screening will also be informed of the details of the secondary screening.

Iwate University is promoting diversity. As part of this effort, Iwate University is implementing the

following measures in relation to this open recruitment.

-Up to 2,000,000 yen for start-up expenses (research expenses) will be provided.

Tenure-track faculty members (Lecturers) will receive a research grant of 2,000,000 yen, the amount

for 2 years starting from the date of hire.

- Priority will be given to women (in cases where performance and qualification evaluations are

deemed equal).*

〇Professors or associate professors

- Up to 1,000,000 yen of retention fund (research expenses) will be provided.

Female Professors/Associate Professors assigned to the university will receive 500,000 yen per year

for 2 years as research expenses.

〇Lecturers

- Up to 200,000 yen of retention fund (research expenses) will be provided.

Female Lecturers assigned to the university will receive 200,000 yen, the amount for 2 years starting

from the date of hire.
