Position for Assistant Professor (Jokyo) in the Laboratory of Horticultural Science
Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University

We are inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Horticultural Science,
Research Group of Agrobiology and Bioresources, Division of Fundamental Agriscience Research, Research
Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University.

1. Title of position:

Assistant Professor (Tenure-track; see Appendix 1).

2. Affiliation:

4. Duties in education:

Lectures, seminars, experimental work, practical training, and exercise courses provided in Graduate School of
Agriculture and School of Agriculture, Hokkaido University (see Appendix 3).

5. Qualifications:
(1) Applicants should have or are expected to have a doctoral degree or Ph.D.

(2) Applicants should have extensive expertise and an outstanding research record in either fruit horticulture or
vegetable horticulture with a focus on horticultural crops grown in the northern biosphere. Furthermore,
applicants must possess the aptitude and motivation to actively engage in education and research in fruit
horticulture and vegetable horticulture upon assuming the position. They should be capable of advancing
research on the development of new cultivation and breeding techniques, as well as the quality and functional
components of fresh produce, and should have a demonstrated research record on the cultivation characteristics,
quality formation, and the environmental responses of horticultural crops in the cold region. (see Appendix 4)

(3) Applicants should be proactive in contributing to the development of Horticultural Science education and
research (see Appendix 3 and 4).

(4) Applicants should be able to provide research guidance regarding the above subjects for undergraduate and
graduate students in Japanese and English.

(5) It is desirable that the researcher has a track record of obtaining external funding.
(6) Applicants should arrive at this post on the scheduled date.

Appendix

1. For Assistant Professor, initial term of employment is 5 years, and an additional term of employment is limited

to an additional 5 years. To qualify for a tenure positions, the candidate’s performance during employment will
be evaluated.

2. The Laboratory of Horticultural Science constitutes the Research Group of Agrobiology and Bioresources. The

research group consists of ten laboratories, namely, Crop Science, Crop Physiology, Plant Pathology, Horticultural
Science, Ornamental Plants and Landscape Architecture, Animal Ecology, Systematic Entomology, Plant
Genetics and Evolution, Cell Biology and Manipulation, Pathogen-Plant Interactions. These laboratories conduct
education and research in the field of agrobiology and bioresources in cooperation with each other.

3. The successful applicant will partly or fully give the lectures listed below, for which the Laboratory of

Horticultural Science is responsible. The laboratory participates in “the Global Education Program for AgriScience
Frontiers” and also provides education only in English.
(1) Subjects in the Graduate School of Agriculture: Study on Agricultural Science I & II, Seminar on Agricultural

Science I & II, Advanced Botany and Agronomy, Advanced Horticultural Science, Advanced Seminar
on Horticultural Science, Advanced Seminar on Botany and Agronomy, Applied Agricultural
Science, and others

(2) Subjects in the School of Agriculture: Introduction of Horticultural Science, Pomology, Vegetable Crops,
Special Course of Agrobiology and Bioresources Laboratory Work on Agrobiology and Bioresources I & II,
Laboratory Work on Biology I & II, Laboratory Exercise of Chemistry I & II, Seminar in Agrobiology and
Bioresources I-IV, Graduation Thesis, and others.

(3) Subjects in general education: General Education Seminar and others.

4. The Horticultural Science Laboratory conducts education and research on fruit trees, vegetables, and edible wild
plants—including wild vegetables and berry crops—grown in northern regions. Its research includes the
physiological and ecological characteristics underlying the cultivation and utilization of these plants, as well as
plant tissue culture, postharvest shelf-life extension technologies, genetic resource evaluation, and
cryopreservation technologies. Recently, research efforts have also focused on the bioactive constituents of fruits
and vegetables and their roles in promoting human health. Currently, the laboratory has one Professor as its sole
faculty member.

5. The Diversity and Inclusion Promotion Headquarters of our university is implementing various initiatives in

addition to the project to subsidize the employment costs of technical assistants as shown in the attached document.
