Summary
The HCS PNC (Hybrid Cloud Solutions Power & Cooling) Service Engineer is responsible for leading the end-to-end deployment, commissioning, operation, and continuous improvement of liquid cooling infrastructure supporting High Performance Computing (HPC) and AI data center environments.
This role combines technical project leadership for power and cooling infrastructure deployments with ownership of global water quality management programs for secondary cooling systems. The successful candidate will work closely with customers, vendors, data center operators, laboratories, and Lenovo global teams to ensure reliable, compliant, and efficient operation of direct liquid cooling (DLC) environments.
The position requires strong expertise in cooling infrastructure, water chemistry, project management, commissioning activities, stakeholder management, and field operations. The role will involve approximately 50% travel to customer and deployment locations globally.
What You Will Do
Project & Infrastructure Deployment Leadership
- Lead end-to-end deployment projects for power and cooling infrastructure within data center environments.
- Manage installation, commissioning, testing, validation, and handover of:
- Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) systems
- Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs)
- Liquid-cooled servers
- Secondary cooling infrastructure including pumps, heat exchangers, manifolds, and piping systems
- Coordinate site readiness assessments, logistics planning, deployment schedules, and resource allocation.
- Review cooling system designs, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, construction documentation, and installation plans.
- Manage project schedules, milestones, budgets, KPIs, and risk mitigation activities.
- Coordinate contractors, vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide technical leadership during system startup, commissioning, and operational acceptance testing.
- Drive adoption of new cooling technologies and continuous improvement initiatives across global deployments.
Water Quality & Compliance Management
- Monitor and manage water treatment programs for secondary cooling systems to ensure scale inhibition, corrosion control, and biological growth prevention.
- Conduct routine field testing and quarterly biological sampling of cooling water systems.
- Coordinate laboratory testing for metals, pH, and other water quality parameters.
- Analyze trends, interpret test results, and implement corrective actions to maintain system compliance.
- Develop preventative maintenance strategies that reduce water-related operational risks.
- Maintain proper water chemistry to maximize equipment reliability, energy efficiency, and environmental compliance.
- Create and maintain Lenovo global operating procedures and standards for water treatment and monitoring.
- Deliver training and technical guidance to global teams on water quality management best practices.
- Establish and manage third-party partnerships supporting global water treatment services.
- Monitor, evaluate, and optimize vendor performance and service quality.
- Partner with Lenovo laboratories and technical teams to provide diagnostics and resolution plans for customer water quality issues.
Service & Technical Operations
- Troubleshoot operational issues involving DLC systems, cooling infrastructure, and water treatment equipment.
- Support deployment and operational readiness of HPC and AI infrastructure solutions.
- Perform preventative maintenance activities including:
- Fluid filter replacement
- Sensor calibration
- Flow verification
- Water treatment monitoring
- System health assessments
- Prepare technical documentation including installation records, test reports, maintenance logs, and operational procedures.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and customer requirements.
- Provide on-site technical support during deployment and operational phases.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Data center infrastructure
- Industrial cooling systems
- HVAC systems
- Water treatment and water quality management
- Commissioning or field engineering
- Experience managing technical projects or infrastructure deployments.
- Basic understanding of:
- Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC)
- Chilled water systems
- Industrial cooling technologies
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and construction documentation.
- Fluent communication skills in both Japanese and English.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel approximately 50% of the time. (Both domestically and internationally)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Water Resources, Data Center Engineering, or related field.
- Experience in HPC, AI infrastructure, or hyperscale data center environments.
- Knowledge of water chemistry and industrial cooling water treatment programs.
- Experience with commissioning and operation of cooling infrastructure.
- Familiarity with:
- Building Management Systems (BMS)
- DCIM platforms
- Remote monitoring technologies
- Experience managing external contractors and service providers.
- Strong stakeholder management skills across technical and business teams.
- Certifications such as:
- Certified Water Technologist (CWT)
- OSHA 10 / OSHA 30
- Related safety or commissioning certifications
- Proven ability to drive technical issues to resolution in complex global environments.
